Dr. T. James Reid received his B.S in Physics at Southeastern Louisiana
University
in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Louisiana State
University
in 1988.
He has spent the last 17 years at The University of Mississippi, where
he is a
Professor of Mathematics. He served as
Acting
Chair of the Mathematics Department in 2001-2002 and is currently the
MAA
Liaison and Editor-in-Chief for the Proceedings of the
Louisiana/Mississippi
Section of the MAA. He has taught a
variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, as well graduate courses
such as
combinatorics.
Dr.
Reid is recognized an effective and successful teacher.
He motivates his students to think critically
and inductively conjecture about the mathematics they are learning. His classes are made enjoyable by appropriate
interjections of humor and his friendly, helpful manner. He
regularly received outstanding student
evaluation in his classes. In addition
he is a popular graduate advisor, having graduated three Ph.D. students
and
currently advising two more.
Dr.
Reid is active in outreach activities, as evidenced by his
participation in
various summer mathematics camps for junior high and high school
students and
his willingness to conduct two Sonia Kovalevsky High School Mathematics
Days
for the Association of Women in Mathematics. He has also served for the
past
four years as the American Mathematics Competition Director of the
State of Mississippi. Dr .Reid maintains an active interest in the
scholarship of teaching, having been invited twice to participate in
national Calculus
Symposia organized by McGraw-Hill.
An
accomplished and well-respected researcher in the area of matroid
theory, Dr. Reid
received the College
of Liberal Arts Teacher
of the Year Award at The University of Mississippi in 1993-1994. He is an active member of both the
Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical
Society. He is also a Fellow of the
Institute for
Combinatorics and its Applications and serves as a Reviewer for
Mathematical
Reviews.
